Calliope
Rescued and Loved by Lisa Tynan

"Calliope was found abandoned with three other horses, tied to a fence in an apartment complex inside the city limits of Houston, Texas. One of the horses perished still tied to the fence, and the other three were in varying stages of neglect. Calliope was emaciated and dull, looking much older than her four years. Because of my job in animal welfare I was told about the horses shortly after they arrived at the city animal shelter, so I offered to come daily and clean up their paddock and show them a little attention since the staff was already overwhelmed. I went every day for a month and absolutely fell in love with Calliope. With patience, she blossomed into a curious little thing, following me around as I picked the paddock. My husband, Bill, joined me on occasion and fell in love too, and even though we live in a townhouse downtown with five other pets, we decided we could somehow make it work to bring her into our lives. A month after she arrived at the shelter and the day after her cruelty case was released by the court, we officially adopted her and brought her to a boarding barn nearby.
I am an animal behaviorist and have ridden horses my whole life, but I always promised myself that if I got to own a horse as an adult I would only train her with positive reinforcement. I had seen and experienced too much anger and physical domination towards these special creatures. Calliope has grown into a confident, calm and eager pupil, as we're learning how to do everything together. She asks to practice at liberty when we play out in her field, and she tries SO hard for me. I know she had been ridden in her previous life because she came to the shelter with bleeding sores on either side of her mouth from a bit. We waited and worked for eight months before I got on her back so she could have time to develop strength and balance. She is a dream pony and I can't wait to see what she's capable of as she learns and grows."
