MacKenzie Rush https://kristiescholten.com/blog/2024/1/mackenzie-rush MacKenzie Rush

Senior Portrait Session

Liberty Hill, Texas

Although new to the show ring, MacKenzie has been riding almost her entire life.  Her favorite memories are with a strawberry roan Quarter Horse Pony named Hank, that her mom found on Craig’s List. MacKenzie and Hank have developed into quite the team, riding in dressage clinic to refine their skills, and were in the ribbon at their very first show!  Although MacKenzie and Hank have had their battles (due to his typical pony mentality), they share their most beautiful moments together when no one is around.

MacKenzie currently attends South Dakota State University, riding on the reining equestrian team.

If you missed out on photos this time, be sure to catch me at the Emerald Classic, Diamond Classic and HDS Summer Show.  I have two options for show photography... you can pay a $25 sitting fee and purchase your photos later, or you can pre-order your full gallery of ride photos for $200.  I guarantee at least 20 nice, well timed, well composed images in your package, but most riders end up with 40-50.  But even if you only get the minimum, it's still a great deal!  You can sign up by emailing me at [email protected] or by texting me at 832-971-8886.  It's never to early to get on the list, so give me a shout before you get busy preparing the week before the show.

In addition to ride photos, I usually have time during the weekend for at least a couple of mini portrait sessions. Horse shows are the only time I offer "mini sessions" and it's a great opportunity to capture a handful of fabulous horse and rider portraits at a reduced sitting fee and without travel expenses.  Plus, there are some really beautiful vignettes for photos around the equestrian center. These 20 minute portrait sessions are $50 and the orders are handled differently than my regular show photos.  Instead of ordering through my website, we'll set up a time for an online meeting and I will assist you with your selections.  If you need help with sizes, I have software that will show you exactly how your portrait will look on the wall in your home or office  My prints and canvases are produced by one of the top labs in the country and all portraits are printed on mounted on double weight artboard and lustre coated for UV protection.  Because so much detail goes into one of my fine art portraits, they are priced differently than show photos.  If you have any questions about prices or availability, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Caza Ladron Fox Hunt https://kristiescholten.com/blog/2024/1/rancho-corazon-fox-hunt Caza Ladron Fox Hunt

Rancho Corazon

Lemitar, New Mexico

Caza Ladron is a registered hunt with the Masters of Foxhounds Association. The club was was founded in the late 1990's by three avid foxhunters, including Guy McElvain and Brian Gonzales, who were the original Masters of Foxhounds, or MFH (a designation you carry even after you no longer actively hunt). The quarry is coyote and 26 hounds are maintained that are crossbred American Foxhound, English Foxhound and Penn-Marydel hounds. The hunts take place north of Albuquerque at designated "fixtures" (public lands)  from October through the end of March. Members of the hunt follow in "fields", very much like the mounted cavalry (it was originally a sport that stemmed from the need to rid the countryside of fox that threatened the landowners' herds of sheep, chickens, etc... and helped to keep the soldiers and horses fit for battle at the same time) and the coyotes chased usually outsmart and outrun the hounds, or "go to ground", meaning they take cover underground or in a spot not accessible to the hounds. Members join afterwards for a potluck breakfast to celebrate the day, as they like to say, "we hunt to eat!".

Kristie Scholten Equine Studio Fine Art https://kristiescholten.com/blog/2023/2/kristie-scholten-equine-studio-fine-art One of the things I miss about my brick and mortar location is creating dramatic images with studio lighting.  One of my biggest inspirations has been the use of light and shadows in old photographs from the golden age of Hollywood. While I have been successful using natural light to create high key white backgrounds and dramatic black backdrops for my fine art portraits, there are many variables that have left me longing for the control I had in the studio. So, a few weeks ago, I dusted off my old equipment, ordered a few missing parts, and began to play.  My creative spirit has been renewed and I am excited about bringing the original vision for my work back to life.

Meaningful Art https://kristiescholten.com/blog/2023/2/meaningful-art I have a confession to make:  I'm a minimalist.  I can't stand junk or clutter. If there's something in my home, it either has to be useful or bring me joy.  And the same goes for what I hang on my walls. I've always believed that artwork in the home needs to be meaningful, not just some random piece purchased to fill an empty space.  This is what has inspired me to do what I do. A painting, drawing or photograph of a person, place or beloved pet that holds a place in your heart does more than bring memories, warmth and character to a room.  It becomes part of your story.

Each and every session, I look for moments that will translate into something that not only captures this sentiment, yet holds it's own as a work of art. Something that would catch your attention if you walked in to a gallery or an exhibition.  Something you would appreciate even if it weren't a photograph of you or your horse, or your child. But it's the connection is what makes it truly special. My goal is to create something timeless that will last for generations.  The canvas your heirs will fight over a hundred years from now. "Look at my great grandmother and her beautiful palomino when she was seventeen... wasn't she gorgeous?"
